Definitions: According to New York State Agriculture and Markets Law, Article 26
  • Animal includes every living creature except a human being
  • Cruelty includes every act, omission, or neglect, whereby unjustifiable physical pain, suffering or death is caused or permitted.

Fact: Animal cruelty is a valuable predictor of present and future violent individuals

Fact: Animal cruelty occurs in all social, economic and cultural denominations.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor crime in New York State punishable by up to one year in prison or up to a $1,000 fine or both. Animal cruelty includes but is not limited to: Animal abandonment; Failure to provide proper sustenance - meaning food, water, proper shelter as defined by NYS AG/MKTs., grooming and veterinary care. Animal Fighting and Aggravated Animal Cruelty are felony crimes in New York State, punishable by up to 4 years in prison or up to $25,000 fine or both. The Warwick Valley Humane Society is committed to assisting local, county and state law enforcement agencies in the alleviation, investigation and prosecution of suspected animal abuse.
