Warwick Valley Humane Society FAQ
What to do if your pet is missing?
Contact the Warwick Valley Humane Society, Inc. immediately at 986-2473. Notify your police department. Check all surrounding animal shelters. Advertise in newspapers, radio, TV and flyers. Most importantly—Keep Looking!
What to do if you find a dog?
Notify your local police department—it’s the law! Contact your local and surrounding humane societies and using caution check for identification tags.
What to do if you find a cat?
Admittance to our shelter facility for cats is based on cage availability and by appointment only. A friendly stray is probably someone’s missing pet. Once you feed a stray, it will not go away. Don’t encourage a stray to stay, unless you plan to keep it. Contact the shelter and provide a description. A feral or wild cat (non-friendly) is most likely not vaccinated. Do not approach or attempt to handle as you will be putting yourself and your pets at risk.
What to do if you need to surrender your pet?
Our shelter maintains a surrender list to admit owned pets when space is available. Ask other family members and friends to take your pet first before surrendering your dog/cat to a shelter. Have your pet up to date on vaccinations and neutered. For your pet’s safety, NEVER advertise “Free to Good Home”.
What is Rabies?
Rabies is a virus that is spread by the saliva of an infected animal and can be fatal. Rabies can be prevented by:
- Maintaining current rabies vaccinations for all dogs and cats, including indoor cats.
- Avoiding all wild animals (it’s natural for them to bite).
If your pet comes in contact with a wild animal or domestic dog or cat that is exhibiting unusual behavior, use protective clothing before administering aid to your pet and contact your veterinarian immediately.
Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?
By spaying/neutering your dog or cat, you can prevent the introduction of more unwanted puppies and kittens into a world that is already full of neglected, abused and homeless animals.
For both male and female, neutering at an early age can help prevent them from later developing health problems.
You can make a difference, both for the health and well-being of your own pets and for the well-being of pets everywhere by being a responsible pet owner. Please neuter and spay your pets.
